Although skills may be taught in isolation and then applied, the majority of instruction in grammar is delivered during writing instruction. This is important because writing conventions differ from spoken conventions. Additionally, writers must learn to effectively convey information exclusively through words, while speakers can rely on gestures, voice inflection and body language. Research shows that teaching grammar in conjunction with writing will strengthen the ability of students to communicate effectively through writing.
Additionally, we utilize Mike Devano’s Writing with Spice program to give students routine and regular practice in applying certain writing techniques and grammatical concepts to their writing.
